Sunan Abi Dawud 3136 (Book 21, Hadith 48) #23426
Compassion for Enemies

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) showed mercy and compassion to the dead, even though they were enemies, by burying them in one grave and giving precedence to the one who had learnt more of the Quran.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah passed Hamzah who was killed and disfigured. He said: If Safiyyah were not grieved, I would have left him until the birds and beasts of prey would have eaten him, and he would have been resurrected from their bellies. The garments were scanty and the slain were in great number. So one, two and three persons were shrouded in one garment. The narrator Qutaybah added: They were then buried in one grave. The Messenger of Allah asked: Which of the two learnt the Qur'an more? He then advanced him toward the qiblah (direction of prayer).

QUICK LESSONS:
Show kindness even towards enemies as it is a sign of true faith .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of a great lesson in mercy and compassion. It is narrated that when the Prophet Muhammad passed by Hamzah, who was killed and disfigured in battle, he said that if it weren't for Safiyyah's grief he would have left him until birds and beasts of prey ate him so that he could be resurrected from their bellies. Despite being enemies, the Prophet still showed mercy by burying them all together with precedence given to those who had learnt more of the Quran. This teaches us that we should show kindness even towards our enemies as it is a sign of true faith. We should also prioritize learning about our religion over other worldly matters as this will benefit us both in this life and hereafter.
