Sunan Abi Dawud 3056 (Book 20, Hadith 129) #23346
Debt and Generosity of the Prophet

SUMMARY: This hadith is about a person who was unable to pay back a debt and the Prophet's response to it.

The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Mu’awiyah through a different chain of narrators to the same effect as narrated by Abu Taubah. This version has "I have nothing to pay from me. The Apostle of Allaah thereupon kept silence and this displeased me".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous with those who are in need; Have faith in Allah's mercy; Show compassion towards others; Remain silent when necessary .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of a situation where someone was unable to pay back their debt. The Prophet remained silent in response, which displeased the person. However, this silence could be interpreted as an act of generosity from the Prophet as he did not pressurize or demand repayment from them. It teaches us that we should be generous with those who are in need and not put too much pressure on them when they are unable to repay us. We should also remember that Allah is more generous than any human being can ever be, so if we trust Him and have faith in His mercy then He will provide for us even when all other sources seem unavailable.
