Sunan Abi Dawud 3044 (Book 20, Hadith 117) #23334
Choosing Between Islam and Jizyah

SUMMARY: A man from the Magians of Hajar came to the Prophet and was given a choice between Islam or paying jizyah.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: A man belonging to 'Asbadhiiyn of the people of Bahrayn, who were the Magians of Hajar, came to the Messenger of Allah and remained with him (for some time), and then came out. I asked him: What have Allah and His Messenger of Allah decided for you? He replied: Evil. I said: Silent. He said: Islam or killing. AbdurRahman ibn Awf said: He accepted jizyah from them. Ibn Abbas said: The people followed the statement of AbdurRahman ibn Awf, and they left that which I heard from the Usbadhi.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect others' beliefs, Be tolerant towards different faiths .
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man from the Magians of Hajar who went to visit the Prophet Muhammad. The Prophet gave him two choices, either accept Islam or pay jizyah, which is a tax paid by non-Muslims living in an Islamic state in exchange for protection. AbdurRahman ibn Awf suggested that he should pay jizyah, and this was accepted by the people. This hadith teaches us that Muslims should be tolerant towards other religions and give them options to choose from when it comes to their faith. It also shows us that we should respect other people's beliefs even if they are different than ours.
