Sunan Abi Dawud 3026 (Book 20, Hadith 99) #23316
Prayer is Essential to Religion

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was willing to make concessions for the Thaqif delegation, but he insisted that prayer is an essential part of religion.

Narrated Uthman ibn Abul'As: When the deputation of Thaqif came to the Messenger of Allah , he made them stay in the mosque, so that it might soften their hearts. They stipulated to him that they would not be called to participate in Jihad, to pay zakat and to offer prayer. The Messenger of Allah said: You may have the concession that you will not be called to participate in jihad and pay zakat, but there is no good in a religion which has no bowing (ie prayer).

QUICK LESSONS:
Offer prayers five times a day

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was approached by a delegation from Thaqif who asked for certain concessions in their religious practice. They requested not to be called upon to participate in jihad, pay zakat, or offer prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) granted them the concession of not participating in jihad and paying zakat, but he made it clear that there is no good in a religion without prayer. This hadith teaches us that prayer is an essential part of our faith and should not be neglected or taken lightly. It also shows us how merciful and understanding the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was towards those who sought his guidance and help. He was willing to make concessions when necessary while still upholding the core values of Islam such as offering prayers five times a day.
