Sahih al-Bukhari 2436 (Book 45, Hadith 11) #2330
Returning Lost Items

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of returning lost items to their rightful owners and the consequences of not doing so.

Narrated Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani: A man asked Allah's Messenger about the Luqata. He said, "Make public announcement of it for one year, then remember the description of its container and the string it is tied with, utilize the money, and if its owner comes back after that, give it to him". The people asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! What about a lost sheep?" Allah's Messenger said, "Take it, for it is for you, for your brother, or for the wolf". The man asked, "O Allah's Messenger ! What about a lost camel?" Allah's Messenger got angry and his cheeks or face became red, and said, "You have no concern with it as it has its feet, and its watercontainer, till its owner finds it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Make public announcements for found items; Utilize found money after 1 year; Return found animals until their owners are found; Respect ownership rights.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of returning lost items to their rightful owners. It tells us that if someone finds a lost item such as a Luqata or a wallet with money in it, they should make an announcement for one year and then use the money if no one claims it. However, when it comes to animals like sheep or camels that have feet and water containers attached to them, they should be left alone until their owner finds them. This hadith teaches us that we must always try our best to return any lost items we find back to its rightful owner as this is what Allah expects from us.
