Sunan Abi Dawud 2929 (Book 20, Hadith 2) #23219
The Benefits of Not Asking for Authority

SUMMARY: It is better to not ask for a position of authority, as if you are given it without asking, you will be helped in discharging it.

Narrated 'Abd al-Rahman b. Samurah: The Messenger of Allah said to me: 'Abdul al-Rahman b. Samurah, do not ask for the position of commander, for if you are given it after asking you will be left to discharge it yourself, but if you are given it without asking you will be helped to discharge it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Trust Allah's plans and leave things up to Him instead taking matters into your own hands . Do your best when put in positions or influence or power .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of not asking for positions of authority. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised 'Abdul al-Rahman b. Samurah to not ask for the position of commander, as if he was given it after asking he would have to discharge it himself. However, if he was given the position without asking then he would be helped in discharging it. This hadith teaches us that we should trust Allah and His plans and leave things up to Him instead of trying to take matters into our own hands. We should also remember that with great power comes great responsibility and so we must always strive to do our best when put in positions of authority or influence.
