Dividing Property According to the Quran

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that property should be divided among those whose share has been prescribed in the Quran, and what remains should go to the nearest male heirs.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet said: Divide the property among those whose share have been prescribed in the Book of Allah, and what remains from the prescribed shares goes to the nearest male heirs.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings when dividing up someone's estate after they pass away

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how to divide property according to Islamic teachings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that when it comes time for a person's property or wealth to be divided, it should first be divided among those who have a share prescribed in the Quran. This includes parents, spouses, children and other relatives. After these shares are given out, whatever is left over should go to the nearest male heir of the deceased person. This means that if there are no other relatives with a share prescribed in the Quran then all of their remaining wealth will go to their closest male relative such as an uncle or brother. It is important for Muslims to remember this teaching when dividing up someone's estate after they pass away so that everyone gets their fair share according to Islamic teachings.
