EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abu Hurairah, warns us against seven characteristics that can lead to destruction. These include assigning partner to Allah, practicing magic, killing a soul which is prohibited by Allah except for what is due, taking usury, consuming the property of an orphan, retreating on the day of battle and slandering chaste women who are indiscreet but believing. We should avoid these things in order to stay away from destruction and lead a righteous life according to Islamic teachings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us that we should be kind towards orphans and not take advantage of them or their property as it will bring about destruction in our lives. Furthermore, we must never retreat from battle when it comes time for jihad as this will also bring about ruinous consequences for ourselves and our community at large. Lastly, we must always be mindful when speaking about others especially women who are chaste but indiscreet; instead we should speak kindly or remain silent altogether so as not to slander them unjustly or cause any harm whatsoever with our words.
