Sacrificing Goats and Baby Camels

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to sacrifice a goat out of every fifty goats, and the Arabs used to sacrifice a baby camel for their idols.

Narrated 'Aishah: The Messenger of Allah used to sacrifice goat out of every fifty goats. Abu Dawud said: Fara' means the first baby camel born (to the Arabs). They used to sacrifice it for their idols, and then eat it, and its skin was thrown on a tree. Atirah was a sacrifice made during the first ten days of Rajab.
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ خُثَيْمٍ، عَنْ يُوسُفَ بْنِ مَاهَكَ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ مِنْ كُلِّ خَمْسِينَ شَاةً شَاةٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ قَالَ بَعْضُهُمُ الْفَرَعُ أَوَّلُ مَا تُنْتَجُ الإِبِلُ كَانُوا يَذْبَحُونَهُ لِطَوَاغِيتِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَأْكُلُونَهُ وَيُلْقَى جِلْدُهُ عَلَى الشَّجَرِ وَالْعَتِيرَةُ فِي الْعَشْرِ الأُوَلِ مِنْ رَجَبٍ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of sacrificing animals in Islam. According to this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to sacrifice one goat out of every fifty goats as an act of worship. Additionally, it mentions that the Arabs used to sacrifice a baby camel for their idols and then eat it. This was known as an Atirah or Fara’ which means ‘the first baby camel born’ in Arabic. Sacrificing animals is still practiced today during Eid-ul-Adha by Muslims all over the world as an act of worship and remembrance of Allah's commandment given in Quran 22:36-37.
