Sunan Abi Dawud 2795 (Book 16, Hadith 8) #23085
The Prophet's Sacrifice and Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's sacrifice of two horned rams and his prayer to Allah.

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Prophet sacrificed two horned rams which were white with black markings and had been castrated. When he made them face the qiblah, he said: I have turned my face towards Him. Who created the heavens and the earth, following Abraham's religion, the true in faith, and I am not one of the polytheists. My prayer, and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah, the Lord of the Universe, Who has no partner. That is what I was commanded to do, and I am one of the Muslims. O Allah it comes from Thee and is given to Thee from Muhammad and his people. In the name of Allah, and Allah is Most Great. He then made sacrifice.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith recounts an event in which the Prophet Muhammad sacrificed two horned rams as an offering to Allah. Before making the sacrifice, he turned towards the qiblah - a direction Muslims face when praying - and made a declaration of faith. He proclaimed that he was following Abraham’s religion, was not one of those who worshipped multiple gods (polytheists) and that his life and death were devoted to Allah alone. He then made the sacrifice in Allah’s name. This hadith teaches us about devotion to God through prayer and sacrifice as well as emphasizing our commitment to monotheism over polytheism. It also serves as a reminder that we should always strive for faithfulness in our lives so that we may be closer to God.
