Sunan Abi Dawud 2689 (Book 15, Hadith 213) #22979
Mercy for Prisoners of War

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ showed mercy to the prisoners taken at Badr, and would have done so even more if Mutim bin 'Adi had been alive.

Jubair bin Mut’im reported the Prophet as saying about the prisoners taken at Badr. If Mut’im bin 'Adi had been alive and spoken to me about these filthy ones, I would have left them for him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Show compassion and kindness towards those who are suffering or in need; be mindful of your words when speaking about others; do not take advantage of another's misfortune; treat your enemies with understanding and respect.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet's mercy towards prisoners taken in war. In this particular case, it was during the Battle of Badr. The Prophet showed mercy to these captives and said that if Mutim bin 'Adi were alive, he would have shown even more mercy. This teaches us that we should show compassion and kindness to those who are in need or suffering, especially those who are our enemies or adversaries. We should not take advantage of their misfortune but instead show them kindness and understanding as much as possible. It also teaches us that we should be mindful of our words when speaking about others, as they can have a lasting impact on how we treat them in difficult situations such as war or conflict.
