Sunan Abi Dawud 2659 (Book 15, Hadith 183) #22949
The Difference Between Jealousy & Pride That Allah Loves & Hates

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the difference between jealousy and pride that Allah loves and hates.

Narrated Jabir ibn Atik: The Prophet said: There is jealousy which Allah loves and jealousy which Allah hates. That which Allah loves is jealousy regarding a matter of doubt, and that which Allah hates is jealousy regarding something which is not doubtful. There is pride which Allah hates and pride which Allah loves. That which Allah loves is a man's pride when fighting and when giving sadaqah and that which Allah hates is pride shown by oppression. The narrator Musa said: "by boasting".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the difference between two emotions, jealousy and pride, that Allah loves and hates. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that there is a type of jealousy which Allah loves, which is when someone has doubts about something. On the other hand, there is a type of jealousy which Allah hates, which is when someone has no doubts about something. Similarly, there are two types of pride; one type of pride which Allah loves such as when someone fights for justice or gives charity out of generosity; while another type of pride which Allah hates such as when someone oppresses others or boasts about themselves.
