Sunan Abi Dawud 2641 (Book 15, Hadith 165) #22931
Fighting for Faith

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that Muslims should fight against those who do not believe in Allah and Muhammad as His messenger until they accept the faith, and when they do, they will have the same rights and responsibilities as Muslims.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet said: I am commanded to fight with men till they testify that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Apostle, face our qiblah (direction of prayer), eat what we slaughter, and pray like us. When they do that, their life and property are unlawful for us except what is due to them. They will have the same rights as the Muslims have, and have the same responsibilities as the Muslims have.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fighting for faith. It was narrated by Anas ibn Malik, who said that Prophet Muhammad was commanded to fight with people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and His Apostle. When people accept this faith, their life and property are protected from harm except what is due to them. They will also have the same rights as Muslims such as freedom of religion, speech, assembly etc., along with the same responsibilities such as paying taxes or following laws of the land. This hadith teaches us to be tolerant towards those who don't share our beliefs but also encourages us to stand up for our own beliefs if necessary.
