Appointing a Leader on a Journey

SUMMARY: When travelling in a group of three, it is important to appoint one person as the leader.

Narrated AbuSa'id al-Khudri: The Prophet said: When three are on a journey, they should appoint one of them as their commander.
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ بَحْرِ بْنِ بَرِّيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَجْلاَنَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِذَا خَرَجَ ثَلاَثَةٌ فِي سَفَرٍ فَلْيُؤَمِّرُوا أَحَدَهُمْ

This hadith teaches us the importance of appointing a leader when travelling in groups. It is important to have someone who can take charge and make decisions for the group, so that everyone can reach their destination safely and efficiently. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us that it is important to be respectful towards our leaders and follow their instructions, as long as they do not go against Islamic teachings. This hadith also teaches us about cooperation and teamwork; by working together we can achieve more than if we were alone.
