Seeking Refuge in Allah from Earthly Evils

SUMMARY: This hadith is about seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of the earth and its inhabitants.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr: When the Messenger of Allah was travelling and night came on, he said: O earth, my Lord and your Lord is Allah; I seek refuge in Allah from your evil, the evil of what you contain, the evil of what has been created in you, and the evil of what creeps upon you; I seek refuge in Allah from lions, from large black snakes, from other snakes, from scorpions, from the evil of jinn which inhabit a settlement, and from a parent and his offspring.
حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، حَدَّثَنِي صَفْوَانُ، حَدَّثَنِي شُرَيْحُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ إِذَا سَافَرَ فَأَقْبَلَ اللَّيْلُ قَالَ ‏ "‏ يَا أَرْضُ رَبِّي وَرَبُّكِ اللَّهُ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ شَرِّكِ وَشَرِّ مَا فِيكِ وَشَرِّ مَا خُلِقَ فِيكِ وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَدِبُّ عَلَيْكِ وَأَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْ أَسَدٍ وَأَسْوَدَ وَمِنَ الْحَيَّةِ وَالْعَقْرَبِ وَمِنْ سَاكِنِ الْبَلَدِ وَمِنْ وَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was travelling and when night came on, he sought refuge in Allah from the evil of what was on the earth. He asked for protection from lions, large black snakes, other snakes, scorpions and jinn that inhabit a settlement. He also asked for protection from a parent and his offspring. This hadith teaches us to seek refuge in Allah whenever we are faced with any kind of danger or fear. It also teaches us to be mindful of our safety when travelling by asking for protection before embarking on a journey. We should always remember that no matter how much we try to protect ourselves physically, it is only through seeking refuge in Allah that we can truly be safe and secure.
