Sunan Abi Dawud 2599 (Book 15, Hadith 123) #22890
The Prayer of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for Travelers

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the prayer that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said when he went on a journey and when he returned. It also explains how his armies followed this pattern of prayer.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: When the Messenger of Allah sat on his camel to go out on a journey, he said: "Allah is Most Great" three times. Then he said: "Glory be to Him Who has made subservient to us, for we had not the strength for it, and to our Lord do we return. O Allah, we ask Thee in this journey of ours, uprightness, piety and such deeds as are pleasing to Thee. O Allah, make easy for us this journey of ours and make its length short for us. O Allah, Thou art the Companion in the journey, and the One Who looks after the family and property in our absence". When he returned, he said these words adding: "Returning, repentant, serving and praising our Lord". The Prophet and his armies said: "Allah is Most Great" when they went up to high ground; and when armies said: "Allah is most Great" when they went up to high ground; and when they descended, they said: "Glory be to Allah". So the prayer was patterned on that.

QUICK LESSONS:
Remembering Allah before going on any kind of trip or journey by reciting prayers asking Him for guidance throughout our travels; thanking Him upon return as He has been with us throughout the entire trip; seeking guidance from God in all matters including travel/journeys; being grateful towards God's blessings .

EXPLANATIONS:
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was about to go on a journey, he would say "Allah is Most Great" three times and then recite a special prayer asking Allah for uprightness and piety during the journey. He would also ask Allah to make the journey easy and short. When returning from the journey, he would add "Returning repentant serving and praising our Lord". His armies followed this same pattern of saying "Allah is Most Great" when they went up high ground and saying "Glory be to Allah" when they descended. This hadith teaches us that we should always remember Allah before going on any kind of trip or journey by reciting prayers asking Him for guidance throughout our travels. We should also thank Him upon our return as He has been with us throughout our entire trip.
