This hadith is about a war cry used by two groups in early Islamic history. The first group were called the ‘Emigrants’ or al Muhajirin in Arabic. They were people who left their homes to follow Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he migrated from Makkah to Madinah. The second group were called ‘Helpers’ or Ansaar in Arabic. They were people who lived in Madinah and welcomed Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when he arrived there with his followers. This hadith tells us that each group had its own war cry which was ‘Abdullah for the emigrants and Abdur Rahman for the helpers. These words are both names of Allah which means that they would call out these names as a way to show their faith in Allah during battle times as well as a way to encourage each other during difficult times on the battlefields.
