Sunan Abi Dawud 2537 (Book 15, Hadith 61) #22828
The Reward of Fighting for Allah

SUMMARY: A man who had given usurious loans in pre-Islamic period was reluctant to embrace Islam until he took them back. He fought in the battle of Uhud and was wounded, and when asked why he fought, he said it was out of anger for Allah and His Apostle. He died and entered Paradise without offering any prayer for Allah.

Narrated AbuHurayrah: Amr ibn Uqaysh had given usurious loans in pre-Islamic period; so he disliked to embrace Islam until he took them. He came on the day of Uhud and asked: Where are my cousins? They (the people) replied: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. He asked: Where is so-and-so? They said: At Uhud. He then put on his coat of mail and rode his horse; he then proceeded towards them. When the Muslims saw him, they said: Keep away, Amir. He said: I have become a believer. He fought until he was wounded. He was then taken to his family wounded. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh came to his sister: Ask him (whether he fought) out of partisanship, out of anger for them, or out of anger for Allah. He said: Out of anger of Allah and His Apostle. He then died and entered Paradise. He did not offer any prayer for Allah.

QUICK LESSONS:
Have faithfulness towards God & Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about a man named Amr ibn Uqaysh who had given usurious loans before embracing Islam. Usury is a type of loan where the borrower has to pay back more than what they borrowed due to interest rates that are added on top of the original amount. Amr ibn Uqaysh disliked becoming Muslim until he could take his money back from those who owed him money, which shows that his faith wasn't strong enough yet at this point in time. However, when the day of Uhud came around, Amr ibn Uqaysh decided to fight alongside Muslims despite not having taken his money back yet; this showed that his faith had grown stronger since then as he chose to fight for Allah instead of worrying about getting his money back first. When Sa'd ibn Mu'adh asked him why he fought, Amr replied that it was out of anger for Allah and His Apostle; this shows how much respect and love Amr now had towards God and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after embracing Islam fully. Even though Amr did not offer any prayer before dying due to being wounded in battle, God still rewarded him with entry into Paradise because fighting for Him is an act worthy enough on its own without needing prayers or other acts as well.
