Striving for Parents Instead of Jihad

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) advised a man to strive for his parents instead of taking part in jihad.

'Abd Allah bin 'Amr said "A man came to the Prophet and said "Apostle of Allaah, May I take part in jihad?" He asked "Do you have parents?" He replied "Yes". So, strive for them". Abu Dawud said: The name of the narrator Abu al-'Abbas, a poet, is al-Sa'ib b. Farrukh.

jihad  *  duty  *  striving

QUICK LESSONS:
Prioritize parental duties over other responsibilities; show respect and compassion towards your parents; strive hard to fulfill their needs and wishes .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of striving for one's parents, as opposed to taking part in jihad. When a man asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) if he could take part in jihad, the Prophet asked him if he had any parents, and when he replied that he did, the Prophet advised him to strive for them instead. This teaches us that our duties towards our parents are more important than any other duty we may have towards society or religion; it is essential that we prioritize our responsibilities towards our family before anything else. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as an example of how compassionate and understanding the Prophet was; even though this man wanted to take part in a noble cause such as jihad, the Prophet still prioritized his parental duties over it.
