Sunan Abi Dawud 2515 (Book 15, Hadith 39) #22806
The Two Types of Fighting

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that there are two types of fighting, one which is done for the sake of Allah and is rewarded, and another which is done for show and will not be rewarded.

Narrated Mu'adh ibn Jabal: The Prophet said: Fighting is of two kinds: The one who seeks Allah's favour, obeys the leader, gives the property he values, treats his associates gently and avoids doing mischief, will have the reward for all the time whether he is asleep or awake; but the one who fights in a boasting spirit, for the sake of display and to gain a reputation, who disobeys the leader and does mischief in the earth will not return credit or without blame.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that there are two types of fighting. The first type is when a person fights in order to seek Allah's favour, obeys their leader, gives away property they value, treats their associates gently and avoids doing mischief. This type of fighting will be rewarded by Allah whether the person is asleep or awake. The second type of fighting is when a person fights in a boasting spirit just to gain fame or reputation. If someone does this kind of fighting then they will not receive any reward from Allah nor will they escape blame. It teaches us that we should always strive to do good deeds for the sake of Allah rather than seeking fame or recognition from others.
