Punishment of Not Going Forth

SUMMARY: The rain stopped from them as a punishment for not going forth.

Najdah bin Nufai’ said "I asked Ibn 'Abbas about the verse".Unless you go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty". He replied "The rain stopped from them. This was their punishment".
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمُؤْمِنِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْحَنَفِيِّ، حَدَّثَنِي نَجْدَةُ بْنُ نُفَيْعٍ، قَالَ ‏:‏ سَأَلْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ هَذِهِ الآيَةِ، ‏{‏ إِلاَّ تَنْفِرُوا يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا ‏}‏ قَالَ ‏:‏ فَأُمْسِكَ عَنْهُمُ الْمَطَرُ وَكَانَ عَذَابَهُمْ

This hadith is about the consequences of not going forth. Ibn 'Abbas was asked about the verse in the Quran which states "Unless you go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty." He replied that this punishment was that the rain stopped from them. This hadith teaches us that if we do not obey Allah's commands, then we will face consequences and punishments. We should always strive to obey Allah's commands and stay away from disobeying Him so that we can avoid any punishments or difficulties in our lives.
