EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about a pre-Islamic practice of fasting on the day of Ashura. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar that before Islam was revealed, people used to fast on this day. When Ramadan was prescribed as an obligatory month for Muslims to fast in, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encouraged people to continue fasting on this day if they wished. This shows us that even though some practices from before Islam were not continued after it was revealed, there were still some practices which were kept and respected by Muslims due to their religious significance. This hadith also teaches us that we should respect our past traditions and cultures while also following Islamic teachings at the same time.
