Fasting in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad used to fast on the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, Ashura' and three days of every month.

Narrated One of the wives of the Prophet: Hunaydah ibn Khalid narrated from his wife on the authority of one of the wives of the Prophet who said: The Messenger of Allah used to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah, Ashura' and three days of every month, that is, the first Monday (of the month) and Thursday.
حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنِ الْحُرِّ بْنِ الصَّبَّاحِ، عَنْ هُنَيْدَةَ بْنِ خَالِدٍ، عَنِ امْرَأَتِهِ، عَنْ بَعْضِ، أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَصُومُ تِسْعَ ذِي الْحِجَّةِ وَيَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَثَلاَثَةَ أَيَّامٍ مِنْ كُلِّ شَهْرٍ أَوَّلَ اثْنَيْنِ مِنَ الشَّهْرِ وَالْخَمِيسَ

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith states that Prophet Muhammad used to fast on certain days throughout the year. He would fast on the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah, which is a month in Islamic calendar, as well as on Ashura', which is a day in Islamic calendar. Additionally, he would also fast three days out of every month; usually these were Mondays and Thursdays. This hadith shows us that fasting was an important part of Prophet Muhammad's life and it should be an important part for us too. It teaches us that we should strive to follow his example by fasting regularly throughout our lives as well.
