Atonement for Breaking Fast During Ramadan

SUMMARY: Breaking the fast during Ramadan is not allowed, and if it happens, atonement is necessary.

Narrated Asma' daughter of Abu Bakr : We broke the fast one during Ramadan when it was cloudy in the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ; then the sun rose. Abu Usamah said: I said to Hisham: Were they commanded to atone for it ? He replied: That was inevitable.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings even when faced with obstacles or difficulties.

EXPLANATIONS:
During the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Asma' daughter of Abu Bakr broke her fast one day during Ramadan when it was cloudy. When the sun rose, Abu Usamah asked Hisham if they were commanded to atone for it and he replied that this was inevitable. This hadith teaches us that breaking a fast during Ramadan is not allowed and if it happens, atonement must be done in order to make up for it. It also shows us how important following Islamic teachings are even in difficult situations such as cloudy weather or other circumstances which may prevent one from fasting properly. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught us that we should always strive to do our best in following Islamic teachings no matter what obstacles we face along the way.
