Sunan Abi Dawud 2320 (Book 14, Hadith 8) #22611
Sighting the Moon in Ramadan

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of sighting the moon to determine when Ramadan begins and ends.

Ibn 'Umar reported the Apostle of Allaah as saying "The month consists of twenty nine days, but do not fast till you sight it (the moon) and do not break your fast till you sight it. If the weather is cloudy, calculate it thirty days. When the twenty-ninth of Sha’ban came, Ibn 'Umar would send someone (who tried) to sight the moon for him. If it was sighted then well and good, in case it was not sighted and there was no cloud and dust before him (on the horizon) he would not keep fast the next day. If there appeared (on the horizon) before him cloud or dust, he would fast the following day. Ibn 'Umar would end his fasting alone with the people and did not follow this calculation".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic traditions even if you don't understand them fully yet
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how Muslims should determine when Ramadan begins and ends. During this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from food and drink. The Prophet Muhammad taught that Muslims should not begin fasting until they have sighted the new moon, which marks the beginning of a new Islamic month. If it is cloudy or dusty on the horizon, then they should calculate thirty days instead. Ibn 'Umar would send someone out to look for the moon each year on Shaban 29th; if it was sighted then he would fast that day, but if there was no cloud or dust before him he would not keep fast that day. He would end his fasting with everyone else regardless of whether he followed this calculation or not. This hadith teaches us about patience and trust in Allah's plan as well as following Islamic traditions even if we don't understand them fully yet.
