Sunan Abi Dawud 2146 (Book 12, Hadith 101) #22437
Discouraging the Beating of Women

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) discouraged the beating of women, but allowed it as a last resort if they become too emboldened.

Iyas ibn Abdullah ibn Abu Dhubab reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: Do not beat Allah's handmaidens, but when Umar came to the Messenger of Allah and said: Women have become emboldened towards their husbands, he (the Prophet) gave permission to beat them. Then many women came round the family of the Messenger of Allah complaining against their husbands. So the Messenger of Allah said: Many women have gone round Muhammad's family complaining against their husbands. They are not the best among you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your spouse, Treat others with kindness, Use non-violence solutions first before using violence

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) discouraged men from beating their wives. He said that it was not acceptable to beat Allah’s handmaidens, and that men should only do so as a last resort if their wives became too emboldened. However, when Umar came to him and reported that women were becoming more bold towards their husbands, he gave permission for them to be beaten. After this many women came to complain against their husbands at the family of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He then said that these men were not among those who are best in society. This hadith teaches us that violence is never an acceptable solution and should only be used as a last resort when all other options have been exhausted. It also teaches us about respecting our spouses and treating them with kindness even in difficult situations.
