Sahih al-Bukhari 2339 (Book 41, Hadith 20) #2241
Cultivating Farms Gratis

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade people from renting out their farms and instead encouraged them to cultivate it themselves or let it be cultivated by others for free.

Narrated Rafi' bin Khadij: My uncle Zuhair said, "Allah's Messenger forbade us to do a thing which was a source of help to us". I said, "Whatever Allah's Messenger said was right". He said, "Allah's Messenger sent for me and asked, 'What are you doing with your farms?' I replied, 'We give our farms on rent on the basis that we get the yield produced at the banks of the water streams (rivers) for the rent, or rent it for some Wasqs of barley and dates'. Allah's Messenger said, 'Do not do so, but cultivate (the land) yourselves or let it be cultivated by others gratis, or keep it uncultivated'. I said, 'We hear and obey'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey God’s commands , Use resources wisely , Be generous , Let someone else cultivate your farm gratis
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of cultivating one's own farm or letting it be cultivated by others gratis. Allah's Messenger ﷺ sent for Rafi bin Khadij and asked him what he was doing with his farms. He replied that they were giving their farms on rent on the basis that they get the yield produced at the banks of water streams for rent or rent it for some wasqs of barley and dates. However, Allah's Messenger ﷺ forbade them from doing so and instead encouraged them to cultivate it themselves or let it be cultivated by others gratis or keep it uncultivated. This hadith teaches us that we should not take advantage of our resources but rather use them in a way which benefits us as well as those around us without taking any monetary gain from them. It also teaches us to obey Allah’s commands even if we do not understand why He has commanded something in particular because He knows best what is good for us in this world and hereafter.
