Marriage of Umm Habibah to the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The Negus married Umm Habibah daughter of Abu Sufyan to the Prophet Muhammad for a dower of four thousand Dirhams.

Az-Zuhri said: The Negus married Umm Habibah daughter of Abu Sufyan to the Messenger of Allah for a dower of four thousand Dirhams. He wrote it to the Messenger of Allah who accepted it.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمِ بْنِ بَزِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَنَّ النَّجَاشِيَّ، زَوَّجَ أُمَّ حَبِيبَةَ بِنْتَ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ عَلَى صَدَاقٍ أَرْبَعَةِ آلاَفِ دِرْهَمٍ وَكَتَبَ بِذَلِكَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فَقَبِلَ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the marriage between Umm Habibah daughter of Abu Sufyan and the Messenger of Allah. The Negus was responsible for arranging this marriage and he set a dower or mahr for her which was four thousand Dirhams. The Prophet accepted it and they were married. This hadith teaches us that marriages should be arranged in an honorable way with proper dowry or mahr being given to the bride by her husband. It also shows us that even though we may not have much money or resources at our disposal we should still strive to do what is right and honorable in our dealings with others.
