Sunan Abi Dawud 1964 (Book 11, Hadith 244) #22256
The Four Rak'ah Prayer

SUMMARY: Uthman offered a four rak'ah prayer to teach the people that the noon or afternoon prayer consists of four rak'ahs.

Narrated Az-Zuhri: Uthman offered complete prayer at Mina for the sake of bedouins who attended (hajj) in large numbers that year. He led the people four rak'ahs in prayer in order to teach them that the prayer (ie noon or afternoon prayer) essentially contained four rak'ahs.

QUICK LESSONS:
Learn about your religion, Practice your faith properly, Help others learn more about their faith

EXPLANATIONS:
Uthman was a companion of Prophet Muhammad and he taught the people about the importance of prayer. He led them in a four rak’ah prayer to demonstrate that noon and afternoon prayers consist of four rak’ahs. This hadith teaches us that it is important to learn about our religion and practice it properly. It also shows us how we should be willing to help others learn more about their faith as well. We can take this lesson from Uthman and strive to be better Muslims by teaching others what we know about Islam.
