Sunan Abi Dawud 1706 (Book 10, Hadith 6) #21998
Lost and Found: The Prophet's Guidance

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that if someone finds something, they should make it known for a year and if the owner comes to claim it, they should give it back.

Narrated Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani: The Messenger of Allah was asked about a find. He said: Make it known for a year. If its seeker comes, deliver it to him, otherwise note its container and its string. Then use it; if its seeker comes, deliver it to him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Make an effort to find out who owns an item by making it known for a year .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about the importance of being honest and responsible when we find something that does not belong to us. According to the Prophet Muhammad, we should make an effort to find out who owns the item by making it known for a year. If its owner comes forward during this time, then we must deliver it back to them. If no one claims ownership of the item after a year has passed, then we can use or keep it as our own. This hadith also teaches us about being patient in seeking justice and doing what is right even when no one is watching or judging us.
