Sunan Abi Dawud 1698 (Book 9, Hadith 143) #21990
The Dangers of Greed and Avarice

SUMMARY: This hadith is warning us against the dangers of greed and avarice, which can lead to cutting off relationships with family and friends.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As: The Messenger of Allah preached and said: Abstain from avarice, for those who had been before you were annihilated due to avarice. It (avarice) commanded them to show niggardliness; it commanded them to cut off their relationship with their nearest relatives, so they cut off. It commanded them to show profligacy, so they showed it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Avoiding extremes, moderation in spending habits

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith warns us about the dangers of greed and avarice. It tells us that those who came before us were destroyed because they allowed themselves to be controlled by these vices. Greed leads people to become niggardly, or stingy, with their money and possessions, while avarice causes them to be wasteful or profligate in their spending. Both of these behaviors can lead to a breakdown in relationships with family members and close friends. We should strive instead for moderation in our spending habits so that we do not fall into either extreme.
