Sunan Abi Dawud 1633 (Book 9, Hadith 78) #21925
The Value of Self-Reliance

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ advised two men to not take charity if they were strong and able to earn a living.

Narrated Ubaydullah ibn Adl ibn al-Khiyar: Two men informed me that they went to the Prophet when he was at the Farewell Pilgrimage while he was distributing the sadaqah and asked him for some of it. He looked us up and down, and seeing that we were robust, he said: If you wish, I shall give you something, but there is nothing spare in it for a rich man or for one who is strong and able to earn a living.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of self-reliance and earning one's own living. It was narrated by Ubaydullah ibn Adl ibn al-Khiyar, who said that he was informed by two men that they went to the Prophet during his Farewell Pilgrimage while he was distributing charity. When the Prophet saw that they were strong and able to earn a living, he advised them not to take any charity as there was nothing spare in it for those who are rich or strong enough to make their own way in life. This hadith teaches us the value of self-reliance and hard work, as well as being mindful of our resources so we can help those who truly need it. We should strive for independence rather than relying on others for our needs, while also being generous with what we have been blessed with so we can help those less fortunate than us.
