Sunan Abi Dawud 1630 (Book 9, Hadith 75) #21922
The Eight Categories of Sadaqat

SUMMARY: Allah has divided those entitled to sadaqat into eight categories and the Prophet (PBUH) should not give out sadaqat until Allah has given a decision about them.

Narrated Ziyad ibn al-Harith as-Suda'i: I came to the Messenger of Allah and swore allegiance to him, and after telling a long story he said: Then a man came to him and said: Give me some of the sadaqah (alms). The Messenger of Allah said: Allah is not pleased with a Prophet's or anyone else's decision about sadaqat till He has given a decision about them Himself. He has divided those entitled to them into eight categories, so if you come within those categories, I shall give you what you desire.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give out charity after consulting with Allah first and understanding who is truly deserving of it. Understand that there are certain people who are more deserving than others when it comes to receiving charity.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of charity and how it should be distributed. It was narrated by Ziyad ibn al-Harith as-Suda'i who came to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He told a long story before asking for some charity from the Prophet. The Prophet then said that Allah has divided those entitled to charity into eight categories and if one falls within these categories, they will be given what they desire. This hadith teaches us that we must not give out charity without consulting with Allah first and understanding who is truly deserving of it. We must also understand that there are certain people who are more deserving than others when it comes to receiving charity.
