Sunan Abi Dawud 1608 (Book 9, Hadith 53) #21900
Generosity in Charity

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) taught that charity should be given with a generous heart and those who give charity will be rewarded on the Day of Judgment.

Narrated Awf ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah entered upon us in the mosque, and he had a stick in his hand. A man hung there a bunch of hashaf. He struck the bunch with the stick, and said: If the owner of this sadaqah (alms) wishes to give a better one than it, he would give. The owner of this sadaqah will eat hashaf on the Day of Judgment.

QUICK LESSONS:
Give generously when giving charity

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) entered a mosque carrying a stick and saw someone had hung up a bundle of hashaf, which is an old type of fabric. He struck the bundle with his stick and said that if the owner wished to give something better than it, he would do so. This teaches us that when giving charity, we should do so generously from our hearts without expecting anything in return. On the Day of Judgment, those who gave charity will be rewarded for their generosity.

This hadith also teaches us about gratitude; even though it was not much, the owner still gave what he could as sadaqah or charity out of his own free will and this act was appreciated by Allah SWT. We can learn from this to always show gratitude for whatever we have been blessed with no matter how small it may seem.
