Sunan Abi Dawud 1592 (Book 9, Hadith 37) #21884
Collecting Zakat from Animals

SUMMARY: The hadith explains the meaning of jalab and janab, which is that zakat should be collected from animals at their dwellings and not pulled to the collector, and that the collector should not stay at a distance from those who bring their animals.

Explaining the meaning of Jalab and janab Muhammad bin Ishaq said The meaning of jalab said is that the zakat of animals should be collected at their places (dwellings), and they (animals) should not be pulled to the collector of zakat. The meaning of janab is that the animals are removed at a distance (from the collector). The owners of the animals should do so. The collector of zakat should not stay at a distance from the places of the people who bring their animals to him. The zakat should be collected in its place.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect people's property when collecting taxes or any other dues; collect taxes fairly without burdening people with long distances; respect people's privacy by staying away from where they live while collecting taxes or dues

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the meaning of jalab and janab in relation to collecting zakat. Jalab means that zakat should be collected from animals at their dwellings, rather than pulling them to the collector. Janab means that when collecting zakat, the collector should not stay at a distance from those who bring their animals. This teaches us that it is important to respect people's property when collecting taxes or any other dues. It also teaches us about fairness in taxation - people should not be burdened with having to travel long distances just for paying taxes or dues. Furthermore, it emphasizes on respecting people's privacy by staying away from where they live while collecting taxes or dues.
