Sunan Abi Dawud 1573 (Book 9, Hadith 18) #21865
Paying Zakat on Gold and Silver

SUMMARY: Zakat is only payable on gold and silver when it reaches a certain amount and after a year has passed.

Narrated Ali ibn AbuTalib: The Prophet said: "When you possess two hundred Dirhams and one year passes on them, five Dirhams are payable. Nothing is incumbent on you, that is, on gold, till it reaches twenty dinars. When you possess twenty dinars and one year passes on them, half a dinar is payable. Whatever exceeds, that will be reckoned properly". (The narrator said: I do not remember whether the words "that will be reckoned properly" were uttered by All himself or he attributed them to the Prophet . No zakat is payable on property till a year passes on it. But Jarir said: Ibn Wahb (sub-narrator) added to this tradition from the Prophet : "No zakat is payable on property until a year passes away on it".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the Islamic obligation of paying zakat on gold and silver. According to this hadith, if someone possesses two hundred dirhams or twenty dinars for one year then they must pay five dirhams or half a dinar respectively as zakat. This means that no zakat is payable until one year passes on the property. The Prophet Muhammad also said that whatever exceeds these amounts will be reckoned properly. In other words, any amount of gold or silver above these thresholds must be calculated according to Islamic law in order to determine how much zakat should be paid.
