Knowledge is Pleasant

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching Abu al-Mundhir a verse from the Quran and praising him for his knowledge.

Ubayy b. Ka'b said: The Messenger of Allah said: Abu al-Mundhir, which verse of Allah's Book that you have is creates ? I replied: Allah and His Apostle know best. He said: Abu al-Mundhir, which verse of Allah's that you have is greatest ? I said: Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Eternal. Thereupon he struck me on the beast and said: May knowledge be pleasant for you, Abu al-Mundhir.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الأَعْلَى، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ إِيَاسٍ، عَنْ أَبِي السَّلِيلِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ رَبَاحٍ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، عَنْ أُبَىِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏"‏ أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ أَىُّ آيَةٍ مَعَكَ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ أَعْظَمُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ قُلْتُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ أَىُّ آيَةٍ مَعَكَ مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ أَعْظَمُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ قُلْتُ ‏{‏ اللَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَىُّ الْقَيُّومُ ‏}‏ قَالَ فَضَرَبَ فِي صَدْرِي وَقَالَ ‏"‏ لِيَهْنِ لَكَ يَا أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ الْعِلْمُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us of a conversation between the Prophet Muhammad and Abu al-Mundhir. The Prophet asked Abu al-Mundhir which verse of Allah's book he knew and when he replied with “Allah and His Apostle know best”, the Prophet praised him for his knowledge by striking him on the beast and saying “May knowledge be pleasant for you”. This hadith teaches us that knowledge is important to have in life as it can bring pleasure to oneself as well as others around them. It also shows us how much respect we should have for those who are knowledgeable in their faith or any other field of study. We should always strive to learn more so that we can become better people in our lives and be able to help others with our newfound wisdom.
