Supplication and Invoking Curses

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recited a supplication daily for a month at the five daily prayers, and those behind him said "Amen" when he invoked a curse on some clans.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Messenger of Allah recited the supplication (Qunut) daily for a month at the noon, afternoon, sunset, night and morning prayers. When he said: "Allah listens to him who praises Him" in the last rak'ah, invoking a curse on some clans of Banu Sulaym, Ri'l, Dhakwan and 'Usayyah, and those who were standing behind him said: Amen.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully recite supplications during prayer/salat , Respond with "Amen" after invoking blessings or mercy from God .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known to recite supplications during his five daily prayers. This hadith specifically mentions that he did this for an entire month. During one of these supplications he invoked a curse on some clans of Banu Sulaym, Ri'l, Dhakwan and 'Usayyah. Those who were standing behind him responded with “Amen” in agreement with the invocation of the curse. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful about what we say in our prayers as it is taken seriously by Allah and those around us. We should also take care to not invoke curses on anyone as it is not something that is encouraged in Islam; rather we should pray for guidance and mercy from Allah for all people regardless of their beliefs or actions.
