Sunan Abi Dawud 1424 (Book 8, Hadith 9) #21716
Prophet Muhammad's Witr Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) practice of reciting certain verses from the Quran during his witr prayer.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: AbdulAziz ibn Jurayj said: I asked Aisha, mother of the believers: With which (surah) the Messenger of Allah used to observe witr? (She reported same as in the Hadith of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, #1418) This version adds: In the third rak'ah he would recite: "Say, He is Allah, the One" (Surah 112), and "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak" (Surah 113), and "Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind" (Surah 114).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful when praying . Recite necessary verses from Quran as part of your prayers . Ask for protection and guidance throughout your life .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about the practice of witr prayer that was observed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Witr is an Islamic prayer that is performed at night after Ishaa prayer and before Fajar prayer. It consists of an odd number of rak'ahs or units with three being the most common. In this particular hadith it is mentioned that in the third rak'ah he would recite three surahs from the Quran; Say He is Allah, The One which is surah 112; Say I seek refuge in Lord of daybreak which is surah 113; and Say I seek refuge in Lord of mankind which is surah 114. This shows us how important it was for him to recite these verses during his witr prayers as a way to connect with Allah SWT and ask for His protection and guidance throughout our lives. It also teaches us to be mindful when we are praying so that we can make sure we are reciting all necessary verses from the Quran as part of our prayers.
