Sunan Abi Dawud 1369 (Book 5, Hadith 120) #21661
Balancing Life with Religious Obligations

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of balancing one's life between religious obligations, family duties, and personal needs.

Narrated 'Aishah: The Prophet called 'Uthman b. Maz'un. When he came to him, he said: 'Uthman, did you dislike my practice ? He said: No, by Allah, but I seek your practice. He said: I sleep, I pray, I keep fast, I (sometimes) leave fast, and I marry women. Fear Allah, 'Uthman, your wife has a right on you, your guest has a right on you, your self has a right on you ; you should keep fast and (sometimes) leave fast, and pray and sleep.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of balance in life. It teaches us that we should not neglect our religious obligations, family duties, or personal needs. We must strive to find a balance between all three aspects of our lives in order to be successful and content. The Prophet Muhammad was an example for us in this regard as he balanced his own life by sleeping, praying, fasting, and marrying women. He also reminded 'Uthman b Maz'un that his wife has rights over him as well as his guests and himself; thus he should strive to keep a balance between fulfilling these obligations while also taking care of himself by fasting sometimes and leaving it other times.
