The Prophet's Night Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to pray thirteen rak'ahs during the night, observing a witr out of that with five, and he did not sit during the five except for the last one.

Narrated 'Aishah: The Messenger of Allah used to pray thirteen rak'ahs during the night, observing a witr out of that with five, he did not sit during the five except the last and then gave the salutation. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Numair reported it from Hisham recently.
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتْ ‏:‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ثَلاَثَ عَشْرَةَ رَكْعَةً يُوتِرُ مِنْهَا بِخَمْسٍ، لاَ يَجْلِسُ فِي شَىْءٍ مِنَ الْخَمْسِ حَتَّى يَجْلِسَ فِي الآخِرَةِ فَيُسَلِّمَ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ ‏:‏ رَوَاهُ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ، نَحْوَهُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about how the Prophet Muhammad used to pray at night. He would perform thirteen rak’ahs of prayer, which is a unit of prayer consisting of standing up, bowing down and prostrating on the ground. Out of these thirteen rak’ahs, he would perform five as witr prayer. During these five rak’ahs he would not sit down except for in between the fourth and fifth one. After completing his prayers he would give salutations or greetings to end it off. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to pray at night as well as how we should do it according to what was done by our beloved prophet Muhammad PBUH.
