Praying Two Rak'ahs Before and After Asr Prayer

SUMMARY: Ibn Umar was asked about praying two rak'ahs before the Maghrib prayer and he replied that he did not see anyone doing it during the time of the Prophet. He permitted to pray two rak'ahs after the Asr prayer.

Narrated Tawus: Ibn 'Umar was asked about praying two rak'ahs before the Maghrib prayer. He replied: I did not see anyone praying them during the time of the Messenger of Allah . He (Ibn Umar) permitted to pray two rak'ahs after the Asr prayer. Abu Dawud said: I heard Yahya b. Ma'in say: The correct name of the narrator Abu Shu'aib is the Shu'aib. Shu'bah made a mistake in narrating his name.
حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، قَالَ سُئِلَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ عَنِ الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ، قَبْلَ الْمَغْرِبِ فَقَالَ مَا رَأَيْتُ أَحَدًا عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ يُصَلِّيهِمَا ‏.‏ وَرَخَّصَ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ سَمِعْتُ يَحْيَى بْنَ مَعِينٍ يَقُولُ هُوَ شُعَيْبٌ يَعْنِي وَهِمَ شُعْبَةُ فِي اسْمِهِ

This hadith is about how to perform prayers according to Sunnah. It states that it is not permissible to pray two rak’ahs before Maghrib prayer as no one did so during the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. However, it is permissible to pray two rak’ahs after Asr prayer as this was done by some companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This hadith teaches us that we should follow what has been taught by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions in order to be successful in our prayers and gain rewards from Allah SWT for them. We should also strive to learn more about Islamic teachings so we can practice them correctly in our lives.
