Sunan Abi Dawud 1201 (Book 4, Hadith 4) #21493
Shortening Prayers While Travelling

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to shorten his prayers while travelling a certain distance.

Narrated Yahya b. Yazid al-Hannani: I asked Anas b. Malik about the shortening of the prayer (while travelling). He said: When the Messenger of Allah went out on a journey of three miles or three farsakh (the narrator Shu'bah doubted), he used to pray two rak'ahs.

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray two rak'ahs when travelling a certain distance away from home/mosque

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith narrated by Yahya b. Yazid al-Hannani and Anas b. Malik states that the Prophet Muhammad used to shorten his prayers while travelling a certain distance, usually three miles or three farsakhs. This is known as Qasr, which is an Arabic term meaning ‘shortening’ or ‘abridging’ of prayer during travel according to Islamic law. This practice was done in order to make it easier for Muslims who were travelling long distances, so they could continue their journey without having to worry about taking too much time for prayer and thus delaying their journey further than necessary. It is important for Muslims to remember that even when shortening their prayers, they should still maintain the same level of concentration and devotion as if they were praying in full length at home or in the mosque; this way, they can still reap all the spiritual benefits of prayer even when on a journey away from home or mosque.
