Sunan Abi Dawud 1198 (Book 4, Hadith 1) #21490
Increase in Prayer for Residents

SUMMARY: The prayer of a resident was increased from two rak'ahs to four, while the prayer of a traveller remained the same.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The prayer was prescribed as consisting of two rak'ahs both when one was resident and when travelling. The prayer while travelling was left according to the original prescription and the prayer of one who was resident was enhanced.

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray two or four Rak’ah depending on whether you are travelling or resident respectively
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when one is travelling, they should pray two rak'ahs as prescribed by Allah. However, when one is not travelling and is living in a place for an extended period of time, they should increase their prayer to four rak'ahs. This increase in prayer shows that Allah wants us to be more devoted and dedicated to Him when we are not travelling and have more time on our hands. It also teaches us that we should take advantage of our free time and use it for worshiping Allah instead of wasting it away on other activities.
