Sunan Abi Dawud 1195 (Book 3, Hadith 35) #21487
Praying During Solar Eclipses

SUMMARY: During a solar eclipse, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prayed and glorified Allah until the sun was clear.

Narrated 'Abd al-Rahman b. Samurah : During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) I was shooting some arrows when an eclipse of the sun took place. I, therefore , threw them (the arrows) away and said: I must see how the Messenger of Allah acts in a solar eclipse today. So I came to him; he was standing (in prayer) raising his hands, glorifying Allah, praising Him, acknowledging that He is the only Deity, and making supplication till the sun was clear. He then recited two surahs and prayed two rak'ahs.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) acted during a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse is when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, blocking out some or all of the sunlight from reaching Earth. When this happened during his lifetime, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Samurah noticed that he stood in prayer raising his hands, glorifying Allah, praising Him, acknowledging that He is the only Deity, and making supplication till the sun was clear. He then recited two surahs and prayed two rak'ahs afterwards. This hadith teaches us to remember Allah in times of difficulty or distress by praying to Him for help and guidance as well as praising Him for His greatness and mercy even when we cannot see it directly with our eyes.
