The Significance of Eclipses

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that the sun and moon are not eclipsed due to anyone's death or birth, and encourages people to supplicate Allah, declare His greatness, and give alms when they witness an eclipse.

Narrated A'ishah (May Allah be pleased with her): The sun and the moon are not eclipsed on account of anyone's death or on account of anyone's birth. So when you see that, supplicate Allah, declare His greatness, and give alms.
حَدَّثَنَا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ لاَ يُخْسَفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ وَلاَ لِحَيَاتِهِ فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ ذَلِكَ فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَكَبِّرُوا وَتَصَدَّقُوا
