Praying During Solar Eclipses

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) led the people in prayer during a solar eclipse, reciting long surahs and bowing and prostrating five times each. He then sat facing the qiblah and made supplications until the eclipse was over.

Narrated Ubayy b. Ka'b: An eclipse of the sun took place in the time of the Messenger of Allah . The Prophet led them in prayer. He recited one of the long surahs, bowing five times and prostrating himself twice. He then stood up for the second rak'ah, recited one of the long surahs, bowed five times, prostrated himself twice, then sat where he was facing the qiblah and made the supplication till the eclipse was over.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take advantage of special occasions like eclipses for extra prayers, Proper etiquette when praying according to Islamic teachings

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how to pray during a solar eclipse according to Prophet Muhammad's example. During a solar eclipse, he led his followers in prayer, reciting one of the long surahs from the Quran while bowing and prostrating five times each for two rak’ah. After completing his prayer, he sat facing towards Mecca or qiblah and made supplications until the eclipse was over. This hadith teaches us that we should take advantage of such occasions to make extra prayers as it is believed that our prayers are more likely to be accepted during an eclipse due to its special nature. It also teaches us that we should always face towards Mecca when praying as this is an important part of Islamic worship which shows respect for Allah’s house in Mecca.
