Sunan Abi Dawud 1155 (Book 2, Hadith 766) #21447
Listening to the Prophet's Sermon on 'Id Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ gave the option to those attending the 'Id prayer to either stay and listen to his sermon or leave if they wished.

Narrated Abdullah ibn as-Sa'ib: I attended the 'Id prayer along with the Messenger of Allah . When he finished the prayer, he said: We shall deliver the sermon; he who likes to sit for listening to it may sit and he who likes to go away may go away. Abu Dawud said: this is a mursal tradition (ie the successor 'Ata directly reporting from the Prophet and omitting the link of the Companions).

QUICK LESSONS:
Attend religious gatherings; Respect others' decisions & choices; Learn more about one's faith; Be close with God.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's practice of giving people attending his sermon on 'Id prayer an option of whether they wanted to stay and listen or leave. He did not force anyone into staying, but rather gave them a choice. This teaches us that we should always give people options in life, instead of forcing them into something they do not want. We should also respect their decisions and choices, no matter what it is. Furthermore, this hadith also encourages us to attend religious gatherings such as sermons so that we can learn more about our faith and be closer with God.
