Sunan Abi Dawud 987 (Book 2, Hadith 598) #21279
Sitting During Prayer According To The Sunnah

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to sit during prayer and how 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar forbade a young boy from playing with pebbles during prayer and told him to do as the Prophet did.

’Abd al-Rahman al-Mu’awl said: 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar saw me playing with pebbles during prayer. When he finished his prayer, he forbade me (to do so) and said: Do as the Apostle used to do. I asked him: How would the Messenger of Allah do? He said: When he sat during the prayer (for reciting the tashahhud), he placed his right hand on his right thigh, and clenched all his fingers, and pointed with the finger which is adjacent to the thumb, and he placed his left hand on his left thigh.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow in the footsteps of our beloved prophet, Focus solely on worshipping Allah SWT without any distractions or interruptions
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to sit during prayer. It was narrated by Abd al-Rahman al-Muawl who said that he saw a young boy playing with pebbles during prayer and when 'Abd Allah b. 'Umar finished his prayer, he forbade him from doing so and told him to do as the Prophet did. He then explained that when the Prophet sat for reciting tashahhud, he placed his right hand on his right thigh while clenching all of his fingers together except for one which was pointed towards the thumb of his hand. His left hand was placed on his left thigh. This hadith teaches us that we should follow in the footsteps of our beloved prophet in every aspect of our lives including our prayers so that we can be rewarded by Allah SWT for following His commands through His messenger's teachings. We should also take care not to distract ourselves or others while praying by engaging in activities such as playing with pebbles or any other activity which may take away from focusing on worshipping Allah SWT alone without any distractions or interruptions whatsoever.
