Seeking Refuge in Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from Allah from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trial of antichrist, and the trial of life and death.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet used to say after the tashahhud: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the punishment in Hell, and I seek refuge in Thee from the punishment in the grave, and I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of antichrist, and I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of life and death".
حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ يُونُسَ الْيَمَامِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ طَاوُسٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ بَعْدَ التَّشَهُّدِ ‏ "‏ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الدَّجَّالِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about seeking refuge in Allah from various trials. It was narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas that Prophet Muhammad used to say a prayer after his tashahhud which included seeking refuge in Allah from four things; punishment in Hell, punishment in the grave, trial of antichrist, and trial of life and death. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn to Allah for protection against all kinds of trials we may face throughout our lives. We should also remember that no matter how difficult our situation may be or how much we are tested by life’s challenges, if we turn to Him with sincerity He will protect us.
